Open Thread -- On The Importance of Fish Poop Edition

So just for kicks and giggles, have you ever wondered what a self-fulfilling prophecy was or wanted to see a self-perpetuating feedback mechanism in action? Or, even more simply and direct, find out why it's not good to break things before you at least learn more about what they do?

Sometimes, it's smart to learn more about the big picture before taking action on incomplete assumptions.

From the site comes this AP Report that Fish Poop helps balance ocean acidity:

Jan. 15, 2009 -- The ocean's delicate acid balance may be getting help from an unexpected source, fish poop.

The increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere not only drives global warming, but also raises the amount of CO2 dissolved in ocean water, tending to make it more acid, potentially a threat to sea life.

Who knew?

There's some excellent information exploring this discovery out there among the vast intertubes network, but one really interesting discussion has been taking place on the science blog The Questionable Authority. In particular, check out the comments where you can run across nuggets ranging from a great link to How to talk to a climate skeptic to an interesting comment regarding anthropogenic vs non-anthropogenic carbon cycles. After reading all of the above, I began to wonder if the "common wisdom" explored here was, in light of the latest scoop on fish poop and the oceanic carbon cycle, now a bit too presumptuous.

Anywho, that's the latest scoop. Below the fold, a selection of semi-related (maybe -- kinda-sorta) past Open Threads.

Which reminds me -- this is an Open Thread, too.

As promised, a listing of loosely related past Open Threads:

A report I caught this morning got me thinking and remembering:

US fugitives unsure Cuba thaw is good news

Others among the more than 70 American fugitives in Cuba fear the opposite — that a thaw in the nearly 50-year-old freeze between neighbors will put them within the reach of U.S. law.

We once had a flourishing Plane Hijacking time period, not only here but around the World, some steps back than were takin and it pretty much stopped.

The arguement is now being pushed that bush has kept this country free of attacks like 9/11 since than, forgetting conviently the Anthrax mailings after 9/11 and the Troops and American citizens Killed, because that was overseas, not on this soil.

Someone industrious enough could go back and look at that past time, than how the bush administration Ignored Warnings of al Qaeda planning to Hijack Planes and use them as weapons, we had the warnings only a few months prior to when the Egyptian Pilot flew his plane into the Ocean killing All Aboard yet nobody ever mentions that!

We could look at who controlled the purse strings, control of Congresses, and who were obstructionists as to policies and who controlled the Executive Brances, like the Armed Marshals flying on planes, not everyone but enough to keep someone guessing which would be picked, and added policies, quietly, under the intelligence we were receiving prior to 9/11 and from the previous administration

Nothing worked on 9/11, NORAD, even the tracking of flights as no one knew how many planes were in the air and dangerous and where they were.

Strong on National Security, who Really is, and what does that mean, just even growing billions into the pockets of defense contractors, or us being told about all the advanced technology we purchase than watching as simplified dog and pony shows are presented at the UN as Proof!@!!

Pelosi wants Bush officials' actions reviewed

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants an investigation into whether the Bush administration broke the law when it fired a group of federal prosecutors.

Now she wants Investigations????

Sure Nancy, whatever you want, as you already showed you could give a shit about The Crimes Committed!!

election cycle, the slim Democratic majority wasn't enough to stifle Republican obstructionism; the GOP even bragged about how successful they were.

They were actively preventing Congress from doing the business of the people, interfering with the business of government for their own agendas.  In some minds, that constituted treason and sedition in the pursuit of supporting domestic enemies against the Constitution and the People of the United States.

Any and nearly all attempts to call for accountability or to initiate investigations were scoffed at, thwarted and outright denied by the GOP, both before 2006 and even after they lost their lock on the majority after 2006.

The incoming Administration and the new balance of Congressional power that we now have is the first time in over 8 years that calling for investigations can actually be answered by actually ~having~ those investigations; anything else would simply have been seen as either political showboating or a dangerous threat to the GOP that could've helped them mobilize their forces even more.

Unfortunately, "now" is the best we can hope for -- as long as they actually follow through and HAVE the investigations...and indict, and convict any and all transgressors.

To always handle 'Obstructionists' and Nothing was even attempted nor said strong enough to push out from that, even though many in the populace knew exactly what was going on.

She and Reed have greatly disappointed me and should be replaced, not with some supper strong leaders, but ones who don't play us as politics, their politics!

that is coming down the pipe will apply to doubling the investigative staff under the new Attorny General and in comparable positions of State Houses across the country.

With all that I've learned, at least a doubling will be required.
