Open Thread -- Veepstakes and Women Edition

Recently, a friend pointed out that the selection of Sarah Palin1 as John McCain's Vice Presidential running mate was more a political calculation than any type of decision to pick someone qualified for the job. One of the biggest reasons she was selected was that she was female -- a calculation intended to pick up disgruntled Clinton fans. My friend said that the selection of a woman, in spite of the reasoning, clearly brings the GOP into the 20th century. After thinking about it a moment, I had to agree with him. Early 20th century, circa 1920; definitely nothing centered around 1973 or beyond. This is an Open Thread.

The other reason is she is a big nod to the religious right...

I believe she supports creationism.

Yep. The footnote has three links -- the one

entitled "Yup, Rallying the Base" touched on that. My friend over on Delphi also mentioned how the choice of a running mate also points to judgment: Obama chose one who would be able to run the nation, and McCain chose one who's under investigation -- and a virtual novice in politics. So much for the "inexperienced" meme they were trying to pummel Obama with.

I did a little

digging on Palin earlier... She should be fun to pick on... And I didn't even think of going near any of the beauty pageant stuff. Though, it was tempting. Especially after watching McCain staring at her butt during her speech. (At least, it looked like he was?)

MariaSamuels' diary

about Sarah Palin is interesting, as is her early piece on the old scoop site.
3 legislators were indicted and trial dates were set. Two of them resigned. One, Rep. Vic Kohring (R-AK), refused to resign. He has stayed in office under indictment for over a month.
Governor Sarah Palin, a Republican, has called for Kohring's resignation. Top legislators in the statehouse met with him to try to find out if and when he would resign. Finally, 2 Republican leaders confronted Kohring in his home. They asked him to resign so that all Republicans wouldn't be brought down by him.

Good catch! Thank you.

This Is Not Good.................

Man arrested in slashing of Obama campaigner
According to police, the unidentified suspect approached and began to shout slurs and insults at the campaigner, who listened, thanked the man for his views and asked him to leave. The angry man complied, but quickly returned and pulled out a knife and slashed the victim in the face.
This apparently happened with Police nearby!!! Be Careful Folks, Real Careful!!! Do We Need Change, You're Damn Right We Do, And The World Needs Us To Change, Now!!

Whoa.

I think this one should go over in the collection that GreyHawk started of these incidents... Jim do you think it qualifies as an "incited violence"?
GreyHawk's picture

Damn -- nice catch, Jim; please add it to the

thread I started the other day on growing violence as a trend...it's here: http://discuss.epluribusmedia.net/onward_christian_soldiers_desperate_measures

It's an insulting choice

Unless you believe women are little more than trophies. And if the rumors about McCain's infidelity for years are true, I guess no one should be surprised at his choice: a trophy VP. I realize that sounds harsh. And it's meant to. John McCain has no business picking someone as inexperienced as Palin to be his VP. It's profoundly insulting to every single citizen of this country. So, what's the game here? Will Stevens suddenly step down and the local Republican party leaders suddenly beg her to step in at this time of crisis thus paving the way for a new nominee? My cynicism knows no bounds...

I am still scratching my head...

Alaska's a small state, population wise, too. So no bang there. Oil? I just keep thinking that there were so many more well qualified Republican women if he was trying to avoid the two white male ticket possibility.

Exactly Cho

I don't like Dick Cheney but one thing that can not be said about him is that he's unqualified to be VP. George HW Bush - qualified Agnew - qualified Ford - qualified Dan Quayle - served both in the House and the Senate before going on to be VP. He may have been a boob but he was qualified for the office. But Palin? I really hope I'm wrong.

yes...

heard a Republican friend say today, something to the effect, "oh great, now we have two idiots running for president."

I heard on NPR that she is for more drilling in Alaska

than McClain proposes, without regard to the environmental impact.
