Open Thread: The Truth Will Set You Free...So We'll Trash It

From TruthOut, some disturbing news:

Guantanamo Interrogators Told to Trash Notes

Michael Melia, of The Associated Press: "The Pentagon urged interrogators at Guantanamo Bay to destroy handwritten notes in case they were called to testify about potentially harsh treatment of detainees, a military defense lawyer said Sunday. The lawyer for Toronto-born Omar Khadr, Lt. Cmdr. William Kuebler, said the instructions were included in an operations manual shown to him by prosecutors and suggest the US deliberately thwarted evidence that could help terror suspects defend themselves at trial."

Bush-style justice in a world where the Republicans have lowered the bar beyond the level of slime.

One wonders just exactly what Bush Administration officials (and Republican congress-critters, Republican DoJ appointees and reich-wingers) are smoking when they claim they're on the side of truth, justice and the American way -- and whether that brain damage is permanent.

This is an Open Thread.

Destroy notes and evidence that not only

could vindicate the detainee, but could also serve to implicate the interrogators and their higher-ups.

Nice.

Congress needs to put out an order immediately calling for a Special Prosecutor and immediately calling for preservation of all notes.

I don't what to say anymore

other than nothing that comes out is really too shocking. I guess my own feelings are even more discouraging to myself when I think about them.

If you're going to politicize Justice

why not be prepared to obstruct it completely from within?

Makes lots of sense, doesn't it?

Extradite...

No pardon by the president gives international immunity for war crimes.

EXTRADITE the War Criminals, if our government is too weakened to do it!

--Lefty!!!

I thought the problem

was with the Bush Administration opting out of treaties and agreements where they could be held responsible? Not sure I am correct on that without going back to check but if I am, extradition won't be an option either.

GreyHawk's picture

Where there were treaties and agreements governing

the behavior that would be deemed illegal or illicit under the treaties, they've unilaterally opted out, however I don't think all their crimes that impact international peoples and nations fall under such an easily-opened umbrella.

Presidential Pardons

I've been wondering how much legal billing power they've applied to scour precedent and constitutional law in order to set the $hrub up on the last day with some sort of eternal, everlasting blanket pardon of his Administration for the crimes of the New American Century.

What's worse than something like that (beyond the 'end of the term crisis' that doesn't permit them to turn the keys over to the newly elected government, of course) is many of their opponents would still feel honor-bound to uphold what they'd consider the core American 'Rule of Law'.

That'd be deep doodoo time.

Reagan

Maybe I'm getting this wrong, but I thought about 225 of the identities of Reagan's pardons have never been disclosed.

GreyHawk's picture

Really...? ~Secret~ pardons...?

That would be well worth determining.

Reuters had an article on closing Guantanamo

a while back: http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSN0219936520080502

I have no doubt that when this thing happens...and I fully expect it will...quietly & without fanfare. The military will do the dirty work for sure....maybe an explosion or (just kidding) the camp will get some bad tomatoes!

This is disgusting

and it weakens us as a country.

What I don't get is how Bush is still in the White House instead of prison.

Bluedaze

As evidence of intentional deception and

destruction of evidence continues, more and more of our citizenry is appalled and asking the same question.

That's ALL they're doing, Asking, as they chat away on the popular boards like KOS, few even clicking through the links, the outrage is all in cyberspace not the Real World!!!

Tell the world: My America Doesn't Torture!

Years ago I read a lot regarding JFK assissination...

and the doctors notes etc. that were discarded.... The BS just goes on and on. The Pentagon has a lot to account for.. If the interrogators were stand up guys and were following the law what would the harm have been with keeping the written notes, the tapes, and what all else.

What makes me wonder is depending on presidential change and say Obama orders troop withdrawals..will the order be obeyed? How corrupt/politicized has our military become?
Bush and Cheney didn't serve, Obama didn't serve.......oh yeah, McCain did.

What Keeps Amazing Me

Is that this Country has done Absolutely Nothing to these Criminals, not only the ones in the administration but also Congress!!

As they once again buried their heads in the sand and are more worried about the Campaigns which has led to a big split, once again, in the Democratic Party from a bunch of Whining Adults!!!!!!

If I See These Criminals Walk, After The Election, Than Kiss This Apathedic Society Bye Bye, and I'm not the only one who feels this way, here or in Most Of The Rest Of This Planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!
