Cracks in the Edifice...

The scandal over the CIA torture tapes continues to spin. Over on DailyKos, several articles with good insights, particularly this one by gchaucer. Over here, clammyc's commentary and several by Jeff Huber lead the way, and emptywheel over at TheNextHurrah has some excellent stuff. Here's a little more fuel for the fire -- an interview between an apparently defensive Bush and Matt Lauer. Note how well Bush prevaricates, dissembles and obfuscates. Just a little more after the jump. Notice how he says that he instructed the interrogators not to use torture, and in the same breath refers back to the DoJ definition of torture -- he's using the redefined term in order to maintain plausible deniability. Of course he didn't authorize tortureDoJ definition only -- he just authorized enhanced interrogation techniquesDoJ-assured as 'non-torture' that he won't specifically name. It's like a nudge, nudge, wink, wink sort of thing. He's intent on keeping his plausible deniability intact, and avoids several direct questions. He's guilty, he knows it, and he'll do anything he can to avoid responsibility for his crimes.

I think I must be suffering from some form of

Post Investigation Letdown Syndrome. Is anyone else finding it difficult to muster up a little outrage over the latest with the CIA destruction of the video tapes? It is like a case of deja vu, another atrocity or possible crime committed by the Bush government is uncovered. Bloggers, pundits, a few reporters and elected Democrats feign outrage, call for an investigation and then nothing happens. Maybe I will be surprised but I just can't put too much hope into anything being done about yet another scandal.

The apparent fear of prosecuting Bush

for all his crimes -- or even investigating those crimes properly -- is dumbfounding. Our nation is truly compromised and unable to function like it was intended. I'm hoping the growing revelations in this latest of scandals helps to tie enough together that the investigation will actually happen and bring about significant corrections, including prosecution of Bush and his cronies... ...I'm hoping, but I don't feel any excitement or true promise within that hope. :/

I think everyone is just left speechless

This doesn't mean to say that they are not deeply, deeply disturbed. It is all beyond words. Except for Bush, who can talk about anything, anytime because what he says has no meaning, no coherence, no depth, no feeling, no comprehension. Me, you, Greyhawk, Standingup - all part of the speechless dumbfounded. But the inward yell of indignation will burst out - together - at the right time.
