Open Thread -- Driving Toward Disaster On A Greenwashed Road

The title of James Howard Kunstler's Sunday piece in the Washington Post is an eye-opening attention-grabber: Wake Up, America. We're Driving Toward Disaster. He starts off with a major kick to the pants:

_____

Everywhere I go these days, talking about the global energy predicament on the college lecture circuit or at environmental conferences, I hear an increasingly shrill cry for "solutions." This is just another symptom of the delusional thinking that now grips the nation, especially among the educated and well-intentioned.

I say this because I detect in this strident plea the desperate wish to keep our "Happy Motoring" utopia running by means other than oil and its byproducts. But the truth is that no combination of solar, wind and nuclear power, ethanol, biodiesel, tar sands and used French-fry oil will allow us to power Wal-Mart, Disney World and the interstate highway system -- or even a fraction of these things -- in the future. We have to make other arrangements.

What's he getting at? Read the article. It's two pages -- you can get a really good idea of the concept, however, if you take a look at rba's morning blurb called Bring 'em on down the road.

Here's a hint: there's a degree of psychological greenwashing going on around here. We need to truly revamp our systems if we are to achieve true advancement, understanding and mastery of our fate, which is ultimately tied to how we live, conduct business, treat our environment and each other.

It's a cradle-to-cradle sort of thinking.

Mishima's Saturday World News is up.

This is an Open Thread.

Slickwashing

We are being gamed. It's that f*cking simple.

Yup

First, we'll have to dramatically reorganize the everyday activities of American life. We'll have to grow our food closer to home, in a manner that will require more human attention. In fact, agriculture needs to return to the center of economic life. We'll have to restore local economic networks -- the very networks that the big-box stores systematically destroyed -- made of fine-grained layers of wholesalers, middlemen and retailers.

We'll also have to occupy the landscape differently, in traditional towns, villages and small cities. Our giant metroplexes are not going to make it, and the successful places will be ones that encourage local farming.

Fixing the U.S. passenger railroad system is probably the one project we could undertake right away that would have the greatest impact on the country's oil consumption. The fact that we're not talking about it -- especially in the presidential campaign -- shows how confused we are.

I've been arguing these points for literally years. Decades. Back to the 1970's when the surrounding farms started being chopped up and sold off as housing developments. There's only so much quality farm land. Housing for people on the other hand, can be adapted to a wide range of terrain.

If I had to choose just one forward looking policy to push for:

National Planning Commission - review land use nation wide to develop sustainable growth and national security.

Set aside fire and slide zones from being used for housing. Maintain wildlife areas, protect water sheds, set aside the best farmland for agriculture, coordinate transportation and market hubs, etc.

Susie...

I'd be really interested to see you develop this into a commentary...

Needs to be spread far and wide.

Land use planning

in most jurisdictions includes the elements you've listed, including these. "Sustainability" is one of the major aspects of all things green. And maybe not a "commission", but the American Planning Association (among many others) has a wealth of information on "smart" and/or "sustainable" growth. The actual policy work is usually done through community, county, and regional general plan committees.

All open to public participation, but most of the public doesn't bother to participate.

National dialogue

I'd like to see planning taken to the national stage. Talk about the country as a whole not just little bits and pieces. Talk about industry and farmland, etc.

Totally off subject ...

I just recently became aware of Locks of Love. If you have long hair and are thinking about going short ... or maybe just want to grow your hair out so you can donate, they have a video on their website to train you and your hairstylist on what to do.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. ~ George Carlin

Techno-integrated Economics

I wrote a little essay related to technology and economics in February of 1999. The term "Peak Oil" hadn't become popular yet but energy is certainly related to automobiles.

Our economists have helped screw things up over the last 50 years with what they never talk about.

Economic Wargames

Maybe we should just start shooting those lying nitwits.

I love this sentence of yours!

The global economy is a giant multilevel, multiplayer chess game. It is however, being played in the dark. The powers that be, have the overhead lights switched off.

'Bout sums it up.

Mixed Reviews

I have had some curious reactions to that essay. A professor of economics at the University of Calgary called me a loony. Another in North Carolina called me an idiot. But still another said I was right and that the text books were wrong.

These economists can't agree on anything. LOL

The Posse was after me.
