Margin Calls: If you want a better haircut, get a better head

Tom Cahill+Katherine Burton/Bloomberg:
Hedge Funds Reel From Margin Calls Even on Treasuries

Collateral `Haircuts'
Banks usually limit their risk on repos by lending less than the value of the securities used as collateral. Tequesta was able to borrow $95 on $100 worth of AAA rated jumbo prime mortgages in early 2007, meaning the bank took a $5, or 5 percent so-called haircut. By last month, the amount required had risen to as much as 30 percent . . .

Damn. Looks like those "international fine-ant-seers" been stricken with a case of terminal stupid. Imagine that: loaning 95 real dollars on 100 bux worth of counterfeit. Oughta be a crime.

Veterans To Commemorate Detroit Winter Soldier Hearings

Members of Veterans For Peace and the Vietnam Veterans Against the
War
will commemorate the 1971 Winter Soldier hearings on Saturday,
March 15th at 2pm at the original hearing site, 2921 West Grand
Boulevard in Detroit. The Detroit commemoration is being held at the
same time Iraq veterans are holding their own Winter Soldier hearings
in Washington, DC.

The "Winter Soldier Investigation" was a gathering sponsored by the
Vietnam Veterans Against the War intended to
publicize war crimes and atrocities by the United States Armed Forces
and their allies in the Vietnam War. The VVAW challenged the morality
and conduct of the war by showing the direct relationship between
military policies and war crimes in Vietnam. The three-day gathering
of 109 veterans and 16 civilians took place in Detroit from January
31-February 2, 1971. Discharged servicemen from each branch of
military service, as well as civilian contractors, medical personnel
and academics, all gave testimony about war crimes they had committed
or witnessed during the years of 1963-1970.

On Thursday March 13 to Sunday March 16, 2008, the Iraq Veterans
Against the War
will hold their own Winter
Soldier hearings. The event will feature testimony from U.S. veterans
who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, giving an accurate account
of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground. The
four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country
to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and
present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there will be
panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to
give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything
from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for
veterans' health benefits and support.

The original Winter Soldier hearings were held at the Howard
Johnson's New Center, which was torn down in the late 1990's. The
commemoration event in Detroit on March 15th will be at the site of
the Howard Johnson's hotel, on the corner of West Grand Boulevard and
3rd Street, which is now a parking lot. The event will consist of
veterans reading the names of the first 100 soldiers killed in both
the Vietnam and present Iraq war, along with statements by veterans
about the parallels between Iraq and Vietnam. The public is invited.

The event is being sponsored by Veterans For Peace – Michigan.

Vets for Peace to Arrest Bush and Cheney

VETERANS FOR PEACE, INC.

“THEY WAVE THE FLAG WHEN YOU ATTACK-- WHEN YOU COME HOME THEY TURN THEIR BACK”

In traditional march cadence, U.S. military veterans will chant that statement on the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, as they lead a Veterans March for Peace to significant sites in Washington, DC, including the National Archives, home of the U.S. Constitution. There, veterans will conduct an action of “civil resistance” – issuing citizen arrest warrants for George Bush and Dick Cheney for multiple violations of the Constitution and international war crimes.

On Wednesday, March 19, members of Veterans For Peace (VFP) will gather on the National Mall, at 9:00 am, on 7th St., between Madison and Jefferson for a brief rally, followed by a silent march to the Museum of Native Americans, where Buffy St. Marie will join in a ceremony honoring the original inhabitants of the North American continent.

Army Col. (ret) Ann Wright, a VFP member, said “This war has cost too many lives and resources that should have been spent on health, education and other needs. The war must be stopped before more Iraqis and Americans are killed, and the sooner the better. Our military presence in Iraq must end so Iraqis can begin to rebuild their lives.”

The Peace March will continue to the Peace Monument on the grounds of the Capitol, where VFP members will confirm their Statement of Purpose which says in part: “We, having dutifully served our nation, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work with others to increase public awareness of the costs of war...(and) to abolish war as an instrument of national policy.”

The National Archives, home of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, will be the next stop. Here, veterans will retake their military oath, the key part of which is: “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”

VFP president, Elliott Adams, explaining why the veterans will then issue citizen arrest warrants for Bush and Cheney, said, “It has long been apparent that our Constitution is under attack and has been deliberately and relentlessly undermined by domestic enemies -- indeed, by our highest government officials who took and have violated that same oath.”

The Peace March will terminate at McPherson Square across from the Veterans Administration Hospital where a field hospital will be set up to demonstrate the human cost of war and the grievances veterans have when they return home.

Founded in 1985, VFP is a national grassroots organization with over 100 chapters. Membership includes men and women veterans of all eras and duty stations spanning the Spanish Civil War, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. VFP is an official Non Governmental Organization (NGO) represented at the UN.
