Chris ...

Daily News is the place for "links of interest". When I click on a commentary, I expect to see more than just a link to another blog.

Do you have any insight to add to the article you linked to? For some reason I thought the article was going to be about the unrest in Zimbabwe ... not about McAuliffe/Obama/Clinton.

Transparent but Equal

I'm sorry at your surprise. Of course if there is a place for something like this there ought to be somewhere to go to find out what can go where and why.

I'm trying after nearly two years now to understand how this site works and why. I'm not making much success out of it.

To my way of thinking significant improvement could come about from the adoption of a mission statement or statement of purpose so people have a rough idea of what they are getting into when they visit.

Such a statement would need to address the issue of what opinion is and what discussing it means and why that is different than having a research orientation.

Are expressions of ennui contributions to the expression of opinion and whatever is supposed to follow from that? Are pet peeves or fetishes similar in function to ennui or contributions to informed discussion?

I would envisage that a draft could be discussed through the site and its participants until something was developed which consensus gelled around.

This would help resolve questions about research versus expressions of opinion, and what kind of contributors EPM's supporters ought to be looking for on other sites and trying to bring in. There is no reason why such matters cannot be publically discussed either. I however am quite sure that if there was a way of deliberating about the kind of views and debate one wants to encourage there would be a lot less shock and awe aroused over some of the contributions which show up.

Accountability. You are all too anonymous. There is no front door to knock and no one to answer. A mission statement elaboration process would provide the means to "surface" an editorial board type arrangement with functions and division of labor. The functions would be associated with people, if you want to discuss improving pet coverage issues here's who to go to and so on.

An editorial board of this sort could only really function if Epm had clarity about who it is, what it is doing and why and how it got to be where it is. These are all questions which many people are interested in but none, as far as I can see, can really get answered.

What do you think about this my list of pet proposals? I hope you won't find them too boring or shocking.
