Palin As Sit-Com

Aaron's excellent commentary got overlooked in the flurry of posts this morning, originally submitted 2008-09-03 01:36:54 -bumping, cho

My disdain for a certain class of American conservatism comes simply from the fact that they talk their talk, but rarely walk their walk. They make claims, for example, about being good Christians, but conveniently ignore the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. They talk a good anti-drug line, but aren’t averse to smoking the occasional jay or doing up a little meth. They talk about the importance of family, but cheat on their own.

This hypocrisy has been around for a long time, of course, and often noted. My favorite example came in an episode of WKRP in Cincinnati called “Real Families” that aired on November 15, 1980. In it, polyestered salesman Herb Tarlik is promoted as the “real” American—and a TV show comes around to profile his family. The tissue of lies that Tarlik and his family have presented to the outside world soon begins to unravel, however, culminating in a wonderful attempt to go to church—but they don’t know where it is (not having been for so long) and, besides, it’s Saturday.

One of the reasons for this hypocrisy is the image of the “real” American built by the media elite and reinforced each election cycle. The media denizens, however, really haven’t a clue as to how most people live; they decide (for example) that Iowans hang out in diners—so flock to diners to find the “real” Iowans. And they take what people say at face value, assuming that no one would be lying to them.

But people do lie. And few of us, anyhow, live up to the image we would like to project. We may want to be good Christians, or Jews, or Hindus, or Moslems, but generally fall far short of what we would like to be or imagine we should be. We may want to live clean and sober, but frustrations, temptations, and the realities of addiction often trump that desire. We may want to raise perfect children, but circumstances of job and the nature of the individual child may make that impossible.

And that’s in the best of all possible scenarios. Most of us live lives of unbelievable complexity where things—and people—constantly go wrong. The mistake of the class of conservatives I’m writing about here is to think that they can hide the wrong and, thereby, make it go away. They have come to believe the image of themselves the clueless media elite have promoted, though they also know—a bit of cognitive dissonance—that it’s all a lie.

Of course, the media themselves are also hamstrung by contradiction, able to parody the very self-image they promote, as happens in the WKRP episode.

All this is to say that what we’ve been seeing this week of Sarah Palin’s family is only what we would see if we rip the façade off of most families. The difference with her and those like her is that they’ve lived a holier-than-thou existence while wallowing in the muck with as much exuberance as anyone—only, behind closed doors. So, Palin is now living out the fictional Tarlik-family scenario, finding herself stripped and exposed in ways cruel to any of us, even if brought on by our own actions.

What is saddest of all is not that conservatives are rallying around Palin, but that they have so long refused to do the same for anyone else. If Palin were a Democrat, a Latina, or a Lesbian, these same people would be excoriating her.

Or

If Palin were a Democrat, a Latina, or a Lesbian . . male.

Or

Biden becomes a single parent by an unforseen tragic event and is praised for his decision not to resign his position in the Senate. Palin on the other hand has her judgement as a parent questioned because she chose to run for governor and now for the Vice Presidency. Both ended up in positions that are demanding of their time. What is the difference here? The rose colored glasses that I viewed Democrats through not only have cracks, the lenses are shattered. The hypocrisy from both sides could choke an elephant.

A Palin of A Different Color

Just think of how different the response to Palin would be if she were a woman of color...the masses would cry in outrage that she has too many kids and one of them pregnant!! Tsk tsk tsk--that is the way "those people" always act! Why doesn't she exert a little self control and practice some abstinence! If she were an African American woman, she would be bashed for not speaking out on the moral wrongness of sex outside of marriage. When "those people" engage in these behaviors RBA notes are common in many families, it is a moral sewer they are rolling in. When it is a white dame popping out white babies--it is a blessed event. What does this say about the latent discomfort in America especially among conservatives about the declining white birthrate and the rapid increase in the birthrate of people of color? The stats were just reported that in just a few years, whites will be the decided minority in America. I think that there is a direct correlation between the obvious Caucasian fecundity salient in the whole Palindrome and the joyful exuberance of the conservatives in finding one of "their own". Pro-life is often, for many people,Pro-White. And yes, that is hypocrisy. And getting back to RBA's thesis, the media reflects the social program--have you noticed all the maternity -looking outfits that have hit the stores for teens? Walking through the Junior section is like walking through the maternity section. The message in the sitcoms and soap operas, with the young singers and the superstars, the tabloid rags and the fashion mags also reflects this. Have white babies. Not married? No problem. It is cool. We have to keep our eye on those numbers...

I look forward to be part of a "caucasian" minority

I know I won't live that long, but I do think that is the trend here and long overdue. Think about it. Anyone a bit dusky is what? Yup. Colored, not white, not the master or should I say Master and Mistress race. Whatever you think of Barack Obama he is just as white as black, but not in the dear old U.S. of A. I agree that the commentary on how can mom watch the babies when she's in the White House are sexist. However I did notice people whom I assume were Republicans (Cho's post) making the same dumb arguments. I think there will be plenty of "stay at home" Moms who are not working because of their views of the male-centered family etc., will be echoing that line. Just as deplorable. Look I'm sure being a mother of 5 kids or a dozen should not keep Palin from the White House, she can always hire a legal nanny to help if her husband isn't up to it. The problem is the political stuff about Palin. A more extreme position on drilling oil in Alaska than McCain (I believe I heard her say she disagreed on this with McCain), then the polar bears, and sex eduction, and no legal abortion. LIKE CHO I had friends who went the illegal route and it was awful. I was lucky but always worried. And when I was newly married and tried to get fitted for a new diaphram in Lawrence, Ks I was publicly humiliated by the doctor for not wanting a child. I was 21 then and not very mature and I was not ready. If McCain wins then he will most likely appoing 3 more conservative Supreme Court Judges. What will happen to this country then. And it will effect environmental issues, Bill of Rights protections, the whole damned thing. I am "pro choice" but honestly whatever the shortcomings of Obama and Biden and I certainly am aware of some, I don't think they are significant IN COMPARISON with what we will face if McCain is elected. And at best, I cannot see how Palin could be any better.
