So it seems the White House reused e-mail tapes... Would someone explain this to me as if I were a six year old?

WASHINGTON - The White House has acknowledged recycling its backup computer tapes of e-mail before October 2003, raising the possibility that many electronic messages — including those pertaining to the CIA leak case — have been taped over and are gone forever.

The disclosure came minutes before midnight Tuesday under a court-ordered deadline that forced the White House to reveal information it has previously refused to provide.
Among the e-mails that could be lost are messages swapped by any White House officials involved in discussions about leaking a CIA officer's identity to reporters.
Before October 2003, the White House recycled its backup tapes "consistent with industry best practices," according to a sworn statement by a White House aide.

The White House "does not know if any e-mails were not properly preserved in the archiving process," said the statement by Theresa Payton, chief information officer for the White House Office of Administration. "We are continuing our efforts," said Payton, whose staff is responsible for the White House e-mail system.

recycling for criminals
Ok, when you make data backups you typically have...
Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun tapes. You might also have a weekly and monthy tape.
(Actually you often probably only have three daily backup tapes).
So after Sun, you stick the Mon tape in and record over the previous week's backup. In addition, once a week you over-write the weekly tape, and once a month, the monthly tape.
I'm guessing they probably should have slapped a 7/1/03, 7/8/03, etc. on the tapes and kept them forever. Instead they have one tape and it only has data from a week ago.
Of course this is over simplified, but you wanted the third grader version.
So if I understand you right....
and my mind is screaming right now......... we have all the money to wage war but cannot afford to purchase tapes to record the people's business. How absolutely stupid does our government think we are......and while I am at it...the educated lawyers, statemen, aides, clerks, etc. They should all be fired or walk around with STUPID printed across their forehead....and never participate in government operations again.
