Petty Politics: McCain/Palin -- GOP's Last Gasp or Political Stalking Horse?

_____

David Springer, an Intel program manager and a San Jose team leader for the McCain campaign, focused on Palin's credentials as a natural leader and a passionate reformer as Alaska's governor. He plays down the suggestion that McCain is using Palin to skim Clinton votes away from Obama.

"I suspect there's a part of that in there, but the choice for vice president is a lot more important than just picking a characteristic that'll swing a few voters," he said. "John is picking her as a natural successor. I don't think gender matters one way or another in how he made his choice."

_____

Perhaps Mr. Springer missed the recent attempt by Karl Rove to pre-marginalize Obama's Vice Presidential pick for a running mate. Mr. Rove tried to set the stage and dialogue for the Obama choice by using Governor Tim Kaine as an example, stating that he felt Obama would make a political choice and not a choice based on what would make a good Vice President or a potential President in the event the Veep was called upon to fill a vacancy. Unfortunately for the McCain campaign, for Ms. Palin, for Mr. Springer and for Karl Rove, the video of that criticism is available online -- and applies perfectly to McCain's selection of Palin. From CBS's "Face the Nation" on August 10, 2008, Rove: Obama Will Make Political Veep Pick:

_____

"I think he's going to make an intensely political choice, not a governing choice," Rove said. "He's going to view this through the prism of a candidate, not through the prism of president; that is to say, he's going to pick somebody that he thinks will on the margin help him in a state like Indiana or Missouri or Virginia. He's not going to be thinking big and broad about the responsibilities of president." ...[...snip...]... "With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he's been a governor for three years, he's been able but undistinguished," Rove said. "I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America."

_____

Oddly enough, all of the above applies equally -- perhaps even more accurately -- to the selection of Sarah Palin by the McCain Campaign...a campaign that is using Karl Rove's strategies and Rovian strategists.

_____

Rove continued: "So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, 'You know what? I'm really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States? What I'm concerned about is, can he bring me the electoral votes of the state of Virginia, the 13 electoral votes in Virginia?'"

_____

Governor Kaine's response1 to Rove's criticism also further defines and delineates a few real potential pitfalls in the selection of Palin, which increasingly begs the question "Why her?" Indeed, many Republican women feel that the choice of Palin tokenizes her in a blatant effort to sweep up any disenchanted Hillary supporters and influence female voters merely on the basis of gender.1

_____

Still, even some Republican women in Silicon Valley are re-evaluating their candidate in light of his decision.

"I'm kind of shocked," said Barbara Koberlein, a retired architectural designer who lives in San Jose's Rose Garden neighborhood. "I think it was a stab to try and save the ticket by trying to get Hillary's supporters to join McCain. But it feels kind of like he's forcing them to make a commitment because she's a woman.

"I just don't think that it's as strong a choice as it could have been," she said. "I'd have gone with a stronger male ticket than trying to just find a woman, any woman, to fill the slot. I was on the edge with McCain myself. This almost pushes me to the other side."

_____

Check out the video of Mr. Rove's appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" a few weeks ago -- scroll forward to the 5:43 point, which immediately precedes the Rove statements quoted earlier in this piece:
Start the video at the 5:43 mark. It is immediately and intensely apparent after watching Mr. Rove's words that the process behind the selection of Palin has been, in fact, purely political and without any intent to select a Veep with proven ability of capable and qualified governance -- and that the process of such political maneuvering was not new to Mr. Rove's mind at the time this was recorded. So, is this the best that the GOP can field -- have they nothing and no-one of substance to field at this point, after ravaging the nation, the economy, the military, the Constitution, the court system and the rule of law? Or could this be one last, final Rovian ploy in an attempt to achieve some type of political masterstroke in the run-up to the November elections? Will John McCain actually emerge as the GOP's nominee, and will Sarah Palin remain by his side as the GOP's VP nominee, or will one or both candidates be replaced -- McCain possibly due a health-related claim, and Palin "out of the interest in the greater good of her party" or for family reasons (not at all tied to the current ongoing investigation that involves her)? The replacement of one or both candidates and the emergence of a surprise team in the final dash toward the November elections would impact Democratic rival Barack Obama's strategy, possibly eating away at their financial war chest to retool ads and create new campaign material adjusted for a new team, but would that be enough to guarantee a decisive gain for the GOP in the election? Even combining the known knowns and known unknowns of GOP dirty tricks like voter caging, redistricting ploys and possible vote manipulation, the GOP faces a nation that has grown weary of the politics of deceit, fear and smear -- and, even more crucially, a nation that has seen what 8 years of nearly complete Republican control and 'governance' has accomplished: devastation, across the board, and a growing and nearly overwhelming desire for change at all levels of government. Maybe this is the GOP's last desperate gasp to find a political solution, or maybe it's final setup of political machinations which, if unsuccessful, will lead them to explore other means to distract the public from the massive degree of damage that 8 years of Republican dominance across the three branches of government have inflicted. In the meantime, here's a classic Tom Petty song to help folks cogitate. Good morning, and enjoy. ___________________________ Footnotes ___________________________

  2. Governor Kaine's retort to Rove's criticism:

    _____

The Democratic governor — who is rumored to be on Barack Obama's potential VP list — pointed out that his state was voted best for business three years in a row by Forbes.com and said "maybe Karl Roves and the Republicans don't care about business climate, that would explain why we're in the situation that we're in".

"Governing Magazine was also named Virginia as the top governed state in America," Kaine told reporters, "maybe to Karl Rove that isn't an achievement that would explain a federal government that couldn't respond to a hurricane a Katrina and couldn't figure out how to start and manage a war."

Well

if the Bush insiders kicked his ass out of D.C. - and we know how primate-like they are - why would anyone think he has something of value to say? The blossom is off the turd.
GreyHawk's picture

Unless he was simply redeployed, partly to

save Bush's ass and partly to help protect Party interests by keeping folks distracted from investigations...and trying to get McCain elected. The GOP faces a real chance of having all their "hard work" at hard-wiring their corruption into the system come completely apart if they fail to win the next election. That's gotta be one heck of a motivator.

Remote Control

Rove didn't get his ass kicked out of DC but that certainly was what the viewing public was intended to believe. Barbie the wannabe Cheney has that Junior League facade that looks so clean and bubbly on the outside but is nasty, self-centered,and manipulative on the inside. She is typical of the RNC manufactured female candidate that is groomed for many years but is fast tracked. I know I've posed this question on another story but who in hells bells is taking care of those 5 children? Not her that is for sure. I work for a female elected official who has two children and I see up how tremendously difficult it is on a day to day basis--that is if one is emotionally disposed to actually provide actual CARE for one's offspring. No, my sense about Barbie is that she pops em out and that's that. Then she is off to her next stepping stone for the RNC--up there in Oil Land. This is so craven and obvious and tired. But it does have Rove all over it. He is still calling the shots--you don't think Gillespie has the moxie for this do you? I don't.

There's another interesting potential twist, too.

She may not have had that last baby. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/30/9336/15731/279/579413 Link is to speculative diary on dKos, borderline in terms of CT theory/scandal sheet, putting forward the thought that the latest Palin pregnancy and birth was by the young daughter, not the governor.

The GOP faces a real chance

Agreed

but every time his name - or any of the other "conservatives" - is publicized in the "third ring out" (tv first, print second, blogs third) it grows the numbers of references/clicks. More hits, more money. And they know it.

Good point.

Right now, money is particularly crucial to their operation.

What's Wrong With This Picture??

Two Families Combined To Run For 'The' Top Government Offices: Now wouldn't Mother Teresa be extremely sad that the McCain's Adopted Daughter, after recently being talked about by her Good friend Cindy, isn't Included In family Photo's or Photo ops!! Do We Need Change, You're Damn Right We Do, And The World Needs Us To Change, Now!!
GreyHawk's picture

...Jim, who's in the pic, and who's not...?

Can you post a list of "who should be there" and "who actually is there"?

McCain's children

Nice catch, Carol! Thanks. :)

McCain sure knows how to celebrate.

Some observations from the Where's George Blogsite

Palin does not have to pick up a lot of Hillary voters to win. What she has to do is energize the base of the Republican party and get the Christian right voters out to the polls something McCain would of had a hard time doing. Palin gives the right a reason to come to the polls. I now have a candidate to vote for not just go cast my ballot against someone. This election is going to be very close a few % of votes in many battle ground states are going to be the difference in winning or losing. Palin just gave many Republicans a reason to go vote.
And an interesting fund raising quote:
It`s simple because we now have a conservative on the ballot. There is a reason McCain who had never raised more than 1M in a day all of a sudden raised 7M $ in just a little over 24 hours. That is why Democrats keep losing the White House "you just don`t get it " Its no contradiction, Most of us on the Right think McCain will be no more than a one term President and now we have a new young exciting conservative with a bright future.
and more about the Christian Right:
I haven't met a conservative Christian yet who didn't see every election as a theological mandate demanding their support for the Republican candidate - any Republican candidate, no matter who they are or what they say. To vote for a Democrat is to be unfaithful to God, according to some of the websites that I've seen. The really, really serious believers are the ones who've stopped mulling over the question of Obama's AntiChrist qualifications - they're convinced that the man is here to insure the End Times and march us all straight into and past the brimstone-scented Gates of Hell. 'Energize Christian voters'... *giggle* ... just having a Democrat in the race energizes Christian voters, opposition candidate regardless.

Can you please explain about "Where's George"

I was interested in your post and googled "Where's George" and a site came up that tracks bills--I am assuming legislative bills. It did not seem to have the kind of comment in your's above. I didn't really want to register without some idea of what kind of site I might be registering in. The article appears to be from a genuine conservative but I also am wondering if it is not intended as a wake-up call to Democrats that they will need to fight hard. (I mean a wake-up call from the person who wrote the Where's George post. On the post itself. It does seem that conservatives don't worry about being too enthusiastic about their candidate when they mobilize. I haven't heard any of any Republicans making remarks about McCain supporters drinking the KoolAid. On the other hand I myself have not seen any manifest zeal on their part. Perhaps the bimbo will change things. You sure do have to believe that God is on your side to even consider having someone so unqualified just a heart beat away from being president.

It's not a political blog per se

I thought it would be interesting to share what folks who are not obssessive progressives think about the choice. Good to get outside the bubble once in a while.

Let's not let McCain set the agenda

Thanks for clarification Cho. I've been thinking about the VEEP thing since my last post. I am reminded of Lakeoff's "Don't Think of an Elephant." It is good to get a take on the conservative response particularly some evengelical Christians. But I think its important not to get fixated on Pallin who is clearly unqualified for the job even if her stance on so-called right-to-life issues, etc does serve as a rallying cry for the evangelicals. I thought that the way the Dems handled family values this time, as opposed to 2004, was masterful. Not having one's home foreclosed orlosing a job for no fault of your own, being able to heat your home or fuel your car are pretty important basic family values. It is a pretty sorry situation when such basics are on the chopping board. I doubt that the present crisis faced by average middle and working class folks is passing the evangelicals by.

I couldn't resist this one.

Let's not forget McCain guys just 'cause Palin is cuter. Hat tip to StumbleOn and GH who recommended it.
If enough people see this video, McCain is finished. This nine and a half minute video, taken from jedreport.com, is truly staggering. It shows McCain’s long record of passionate support for both President Bush and the Iraq war - despite his recent claims of being its “greatest critic” - and it shows how deeply committed he is to maintaining the status quo regardless of the will of America or Iraq. Please watch… and forward like crazy.

Thanks, Carol.

McCain is not what we need -- the nation has already suffered multiple muggings, stabbings, major organ removals and brain transplants at the hands of the GOP; we certainly don't need McCain to impede healing and recovery therapy by trying to embalm what remains, before the machine that goes "ping!" stops beeping...
