Guantanamo Interrogators Told to Trash Notes

Michael Melia, of The Associated Press: "The Pentagon urged interrogators at Guantanamo Bay to destroy handwritten notes in case they were called to testify about potentially harsh treatment of detainees, a military defense lawyer said Sunday. The lawyer for Toronto-born Omar Khadr, Lt. Cmdr. William Kuebler, said the instructions were included in an operations manual shown to him by prosecutors and suggest the US deliberately thwarted evidence that could help terror suspects defend themselves at trial."

Bush-style justice in a world where the Republicans have lowered the bar beyond the level of slime.

One wonders just exactly what Bush Administration officials (and Republican congress-critters, Republican DoJ appointees and reich-wingers) are smoking when they claim they're on the side of truth, justice and the American way -- and whether that brain damage is permanent.

Open Thread: Stimulating Alternatives

Talking about "stimulus plans" for the economy, for alternative energy development and the national infrastructure is, well, stimulating. Check out the following article from TruthOut -- t r u t h o u t >> Green Stimulus: Let's Try Again by Dean Baker, Truthout | Perspective, published Tuesday 27 May 2008. Good points, good suggestions -- here's an excerpt:

_____

These are good forms of stimuli that can increase demand while addressing immediate needs, but we should also think of the long-term. Specifically, we should find forms of stimuli that can get the economy on a more energy-efficient path.

[...snip...]

We should also begin to lay the infrastructure for an energy-efficient economy. This will mean more efficient power plants and transmission lines, increased used of trains and mass transit, and, of course, promoting alternative energy sources. [...snip...] a good stimulus package will not only provide a temporary boost to the economy, it can also help set us on this course toward an energy-efficient economy.

Strange Bedfellows: The GOP Helps Clinton, Fearing Obama Victory

Game on, folks: looks like the GOP has decided that McCain's only chance is against Hillary Clinton, and they are pulling out all the stops to garner more "support" -- in appearance only -- to help defeat any chance of a Barack Obama nomination.

This is classic tactic -- not only a GOP one, but also a Democratic one: remember gaming the system during their primaries to keep their players in the race longer? The Democratic interference was less likely to kill a viable candidate's chances -- the entire Republican field sucked; now it simply sucks with an army of one instead of many. But the Republican party has played this game to great effect before: remember the Lamont/Lieberman primary? ePluribus Media covered the GOP/Lieberman alliance at that time:

As long as we're aware of it, we can counter it and let our own voters decide. Let's not be faced with another Liebermanesque type of "victory" due to Republican manipulations.
