To Everyone That Did This For The Veterans
Just a quick message of thanks to everyone that helped this happen from Paul Rieckhoff before he went in to watch President Barack Obama sign IAVA's number one legislative priority for the year into law - advance funding for VA healthcare.
You can dig around here for more of the great things IAVA has been and is still working on.

GOP Underestimates Conservative America
While President Obama is going about his valiant and statesman-like attempt to rescue America and restore our image at home and abroad, the GOP politics as usual, diehard operatives are acting like spoiled brats determined to undermine the president–and America's–effort. But in their blind attempt to regain power they seem to have forgotten one important fact–the vast majority of true conservatives are fiercely loyal Americans, and don't share their view of power at any cost.
While "true conservatives" have a vastly different view from "true liberals" regarding the policies that make America great, the two groups have one very important thing in common–both groups understand that even as we indulge in our sibling rivalry, we are all Americans--family–which means the viability of our nation and proud American traditions must come first.

The revisionist are out in force in an attempt to rewrite history regarding the rein of George W. Bush as President of the United States. But fortunately, the internet is brutally tenacious in recording how the vast majority of Americans really feel about this eminently corrupt and incompetent abomination of American governance. So let us set the record straight--not for vengeance, but for posterity:
Oh, Sweet patriot, square of jaw, and demeanor of great command, you fearlessly stand in defense of America, and the savior of all God’s chosen men. Anointed by God as his personal envoy to all men, corrupt and blind, and charged with the swift and brutal destruction of heathens of other kind.
The Assassination Cartoon

I’m all for freedom of speech, but there are limits. Along with freedom comes responsibility, and the New York Post demonstrated the complete absence of responsibility with the publication of their cartoon depicting the assassination of the President of the United States.
While freedom of speech and expression are indeed a cornerstone of American democracy, it is against the law to shout “fire” in a crowded theater–and with good reason. It is necessary for a free society to protect itself from those who don’t have the common sense to recognize that what they consider funny, or a practical joke, can get people killed. Thus, even in a free society it is sometimes necessary to jail a free citizen for behavior that amounts to criminal stupidity. While I’m not an attorney, I think they call it criminal negligence.
Irrational Lampoon
If you play "yes we can" backwards it sounds like "nuke U.S.A." The real reason the right wing thinks he is not American is because they found a message hidden on one of the campaign song album covers: "bur ac i5 code"... They are all certain it is really his until-now unknown evil twin, Barry "the communist" Obama, from Kenya that is currently occupying the White House - just so you know where the name Barry really comes from.
An Economically Created Health Care Disaster
And your state is sure to be suffering:
“Medicaid rolls are surging, by unprecedented rates in some states, as the recession tightens its grip on the economy and Americans lose their employer-sponsored health coverage along with their jobs.” In many states, Medicaid rolls grew by 5 to 10 percent in the last year, often double the growth the previous year. Congress is likely to extend Medicaid aid to states in the upcoming stimulus package.
And, as early as March, Obama will be moving forward on health care reform, according to the Politico:
The move signals Obama’s intent to keep one of the most ambitious and politically crucial campaign promises at the top of his agenda. On the campaign trail, Obama pledged to provide universal health care by the end of his first term, but the severity of the economic downturn has raised doubts about how quickly he can deliver on that promise. Obama and his point person on health care, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, have staffed up like they plan to push forward with it, lining up a roster of communications and policy strategists to assist in the effort.
I wrote last week on a Tom Daschle statement that could be taken as a signal of which way Obama wants him to go:
words in a shop window

Cross-posted at The National Gadfly
Every morning on my walk to the bus, I pass the windows of a shop called Bazar. They sell imports, womens' clothing, shoes, etc. I often look at the dresses on display with an eye for something my wife would like me to surprise her with. They often have some posters for bands or performances that I assume the owner fancies.
Open Tread
Barack Obama is burning rubber in the Poll position leaving McCain far behind in his dust. Meanwhile, Nate Silver at the poll watching site FiveThirtyEight.com sums up the remaining weeks of the McCain campaign in a Bush terror threat like chart.
McCain is, again, asking his supporters to "Stand Up!" on the starting line with Bush and himself:
McCain is busy doing hard right turns on a track that only allows for left hand turns and wonders why he is getting lapped over and over again...
Obama and Nooses
As John McCain asks his supporters to be more respectful of Barack Obama - and gets booed for it by his rabid supporters - MSOC at My Left Wing finds some disturbing actions by the right wing:
Remarks of Two OEF and OIF Veterans, DNC 2008, and Success!

In case you missed these powerful words from Two of our Countries Dedicated Veterans of the Current Occupation Theaters.
Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan can be Proud of these two, your brother and sister Veterans, as can the Families of All who are Serving and have Served, for You All are the Only Ones Sacrificing as this Country refuses to understand that Sacrifice!
The 'Honorable Cause' is the protection of your brother's and sister's as they protect you, in any conflict theater this nation sends those that serve it, wrong or right!
The racial implications of a Barack Obama Presidency

by Mikhail Lyubansky
This is heresy I know, since most of the white majority likes to pretend that it’s colorblind, but race needs to be part of the calculus in the November election for all voters. Of course, it was never not going to be part of the equation. And race is certainly part of the explicit discourse for Black voters, as it always is. My point is that it's high time white folks join in the discussion and acknowledge that it matters. Because it does.
