Kirsten Elizabeth Gillibrand (née Rutnik; /ˈkɪərstən ˈdʒɪlɪbrænd/ (listen) KEER-stən JIL-i-brand; born December 9, 1966) is an American attorney and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from New York since 2009. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as U.S. Representative for New York's 20th congressional district from 2007 to 2009.
Gillibrand was born and raised in upstate New York to two attorney parents. She attended Dartmouth College and then the UCLA School of Law, graduating from the latter in 1991. She practiced with the law firms of Davis Polk and Boies Schiller Flexner in the 1990s and early 2000s, held a judicial clerkship, worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and worked for Hillary Clinton's 2000 U.S. Senate campaign.
