Death Panels, Palin's Targets, and Political Assassination

Michael Collins

The attempted assassination of Representative Gabrielle Giffords raises the bar for political lies and hate to a new level.  Previously, incendiary political lies stopped just short violent imagery.  Sarah Palin's Take Back 20 campaign presented a violent threat in the form of rifle site crosshairs placed over the congressional districts of 20 Democratic supporters of health care reform.

Ironically, Giffords sent Palin a clear message to end the violent allusion in the ads.  In this brief video, she warns:

Lawless Nation - the Executive Branch

By Michael Collins
Part I of III

"The architecture of a totalitarian state is almost fully in place and the lawless implementation is accelerating. While the Bush violations of the Constitution and various federal codes were greeted with shock in some quarters, the staid declaration of a presidential assassination order by Nobel Peace Prize winner, President Barack Obama, was met with virtually no resistance by Congress." The WPost’s David Ignatius Pens Another Exculpatory Brief for CIA

[cross-post submitted Jul 23rd, 2009: The Public Record ]

By Melvin A. Goodman

David Ignatius, the mainstream media’s leading apologist for the Central Intelligence Agency, has written another exculpatory brief for the CIA. In today’s Washington Post, Ignatius defends the CIA’s assassination program and implies that no investigation is needed since “nobody had been killed.”

A week ago, Ignatius argued that it was “just plain nuts” to have an investigation and that CIA operatives would refuse assignments in counterterrorism in the wake of any investigation. What Ignatius doesn’t do is discuss the legal and moral implications of a secret assassination program or the CIA’s tortured history in this field.

The CIA is no stranger to the field of assassination where they have contributed to numerous disasters. Revelations of assassination plots in Cuba, the Congo, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam in the early 1960–at the direction of the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations–led to a ban on CIA political assassinations in the mid-1970s. None of these assassination attempts helped U.S. national security interests, and all of them led to increased violence, even terrorism.

UN begins probe into Bhutto killing; Pakistan to determine ultimate culpability

From an AFP News Brief on France24.com comes this news:

UN begins probe into Bhutto killing

A UN commission appointed to investigate the assassination of Pakistan's former prime minister Benazir Bhutto began work on Wednesday, a spokesman said.

The panel, which has a six-month mandate, is being led by the Chilean ambassador to the United Nations, Heraldo Munoz, and includes an Indonesian ex-attorney general and an Irish former police official.

Good news for the potential for justice, but only if the investigation can get through to the roots of the problem. Deadeye Dick may not have anything to worry about, but -- perhaps fortunately for the rest of us -- the Aspens may not actually turn in clusters, but they are all connected at their roots:

The Assassination Cartoon

BENEATH THE SPIN • ERIC L. WATTREE

I’m all for freedom of speech, but there are limits. Along with freedom comes responsibility, and the New York Post demonstrated the complete absence of responsibility with the publication of their cartoon depicting the assassination of the President of the United States.

While freedom of speech and expression are indeed a cornerstone of American democracy, it is against the law to shout “fire” in a crowded theater–and with good reason. It is necessary for a free society to protect itself from those who don’t have the common sense to recognize that what they consider funny, or a practical joke, can get people killed. Thus, even in a free society it is sometimes necessary to jail a free citizen for behavior that amounts to criminal stupidity. While I’m not an attorney, I think they call it criminal negligence.

What about the sensitivity to the Kennedy Family? Hillary?

That image above is hard to look at, sad to remember, and hard for many to swallow. That is assassination.

I don't know what Hillary Clinton was thinking of to invoke the painful memory of Robert F. Kennedy into this, but after this she is definitely not worthy of any Vice Presidential slot.

Benazir Bhutto Has Been Assassinated

Less than an hour ago former Pakistani Prime Minister Bhutto was killed while addressing a rally. Apparently she was first shot and this was followed up by a suicide bombing that created a large explosion. Reportedly somewhere around 20 people were killed by the bomb. The outdoor rally was taking place in city near the Pakistani capital. She is someone I honor for her bravery.
