Nick Benton's Corner: The Decade From Hell?

Was this, as Time magazine suggests, really the “Decade from Hell?”

Actual reality, of course, can't be broken up into the neat packages of time, such as decades, that humanity has devised in the form of clocks and calendars. We worship those inventions, and it is universally accepted to place in them the inordinate powers we prescribe to anniversaries and other features of an occult-like numerology.

Irritating little tidbits that are stuck in my craw

A couple of things are stuck in my craw at the moment:

Doesn't Track...

Dunno about anyone else, but the alleged message from Osama Bin Laden this past June doesn't track for me:

__________

In his latest message in June, bin Laden said U.S. President Barack Obama had planted the seeds of "revenge and hatred" toward the United States in the Muslim world.
__________

That seems too...Cheney-esque, as if in response to a Bush message.

Anybody else finding that to be a bit "weird"? Kinda wingnutty-flavored, imo...

Feeding the Hungry

__________

Food stamp list soars past 35 million: USDA

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 35 million Americans received food stamps in June, up 22 percent from June 2008 and a new record as the country continued to grapple with the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
__________

Yes, another gift that keeps on giving -- the fruitful bounty of a collapsed economy, courtesy of 8 years of Republican "compassionate conservative" 'leadership' and fiscal goodness.

Thanks, folks. We appreciate how strongly you like to drive home the point that you're only "in it to win it" and don't give an actual damn about the nation or our people, so -- while we're thinking about it -- could you now kindly shut the hell up and stop messing with the healthcare debate?

I know quite a few people who are in dire need of a strong public option, and you sidewinders are lying, cheating and fomenting violence & discord simply to prevent a viable reform from happening.Get the hell out of the way -- your ideas have damaging our nation for too long. You lost the election by a wide margin, and the rest of America gave the incoming party a new mandate: Pay attention and take care of the nation and her people, or we'll kick you to the curb like your predecessors.

That's the extemely short Extreme Short List. There's waaaay to much to simply start listing them out.

Happy Saturday, folks. (ed. -- heh, oops. Friday. -- GH)

OK, I Got A Couple Of Important Thingies Here...........

First off it's October 6th, and most days bring with them a history of the past, much forgotten quickly and lessons not learned.

Here's just one for today which I'll call The bush Families & GOP's Favorite Terrorist Pal, and no it's not the one nobody thinks about anymore, especially the little bush:

Today in History: October 6, 1976

Before 9/11 - Taliban - al Qaeda

The National Security Archive has just released a Load of Files Electronic Briefing Book No. 253 Posted - August 20, 2008 under the title: 1998 Missile Strikes on Bin Laden May Have Backfired with a subtitle: Extensive 1999 Report on Al-Qaeda Threat Released by U.S. Dept of Energy, Taliban Told U.S. They Wanted to Bomb Washington

The Barbecue Republic Revisited

Every week I read out of the way, oddly related stories that remind me what an abject barbecue republic America has become under young Mr. Bush's stewardship. Here are a few of the latest ones.

First up is an item that apparently only James Gordon Meek of the New York Daily News and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann cared enough about to report. On August 2 Meek wrote "In the immediate aftermath of the 2001 anthrax attacks, White House officials repeatedly pressed FBI Director Robert Mueller to prove it was a second-wave assault by Al Qaeda, but investigators ruled that out."

After New York Sun photo editor Robert Stevens died from anthrax exposure in October 2001, Mueller was "beaten up" during Bush's morning intelligence briefs for not manufacturing proof that bin Laden was behind the attack of the killer spores. Meek's source, a retired senior FBI official, said, "They really wanted to blame somebody in the Middle East."

By the time Bush was bullying Mueller to cook the evidence on the Anthrax scare, according to the ex-FBI man, the Bureau already knew that the anthrax concealed in mail to media figures and a U.S. Senator was a military strain of the bio-weapon. The ex-official said, "They couldn't go from box cutters one week to weapons-grade anthrax the next."

No, and they couldn't go from box cutters to city buster nuclear weapons very quickly either, but that didn't stop the administration from planting visions of mushroom clouds in our heads to justify their Iraq invasion.

Psssssst.....over here in Pakistan.

Since nothing that is about anything other than what Clinton or Obama said or didn’t say, or why John Edwards HAS to stay in/drop out of the Presidential race gets read or reported any more, and since the corporate media is more concerned with Britney or American Idol or what Clinton or Obama said or didn’t say, or why Mitt’s hair is just sooooooo perfect, other major events have gone completely unnoticed.
