National Business Group Uses Illegal Tactics to Intimidate and Undermine Opposition

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two advocacy coalitions urged the FBI this week to launch a full-scale criminal investigation into unlawful activities committed by the Chamber of Commerce (COC) and those of its law firm, Hunton & Williams (H&W), and three military intelligence contractors hired by the law firm – HBGary Federal, Berico Technologies and Palantir Technologies, collectively called Team Themis. StopTheChamber.com (STC) and VelvetRevolution.us (VR) sent letters to the FBI detailing how these organizations jointly conspired and conducted a proposed $12 million Watergate-like campaign against STC, VR and their staff, as well as other organizations and reporters.

Although this apparent criminal operation violated both federal laws and constitutional protections, neither the FBI nor the Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced any investigation.

Cites Richard Wyatt, John Woods And Robert Quackenboss For Participating In Dirty Tricks Spying Plot Against NGOs, Reporters And Unions

Complaint Ties Leaked Emails To A Dozen Criminal Violations And Intentional Torts

Washington, D.C. -- On Wednesday, February 23, 2011, two watchdog groups filed a lengthy bar complaint with the Board of Professional Responsibility in Washington D.C. against Hunton & Williams attorneys Richard Wyatt, John Woods and Robert Quackenboss for their participation in a dirty tricks campaign against the groups. The complaint can be viewed at http://www.velvetrevolution.us/images/H_W_Bar_complaint.pdf. Two weeks ago, 71,000 emails created by investigators working for Hunton & Williams were leaked by the hacktivist network Anonymous. They showed that the lawyers, on behalf of their clients, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Bank of America, solicited and conspired with the investigators to engage in a long list of criminal conduct and intentional torts against reporters, NGOs and Unions. This has been reported widely in the national press, including the Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/14/AR2011021406281.html?wprss=rss_nation

Ralph Nader and StopTheChamber.com inform Pres. Obama's walk to US Chamber of Commerce

Akin to the futile cycle of bipartisan outreach, citizen and union advocates, natural persons, and others were joined by sometime presidential candidate Ralph Nader in trying to be heard by sometime champion, President Obama, as he walked to the Chamber of Commerce side of Lafayette Park.

After watching President Obama and the Democratic party water down healthcare reform with the help of AHIP and seeing them get insurance corporations some serious corporate welfare, water down FineReg with the help of the Bankers that destroyed the world economy by propping them up with trillions of dollars worth of free money so they could keep on rolling in their bonus money and profits, I am finding it hard to see how this can possibly lead to anything good in any way, shape or form:

President Barack Obama is preparing new overtures to business that may start with a walk into the headquarters of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a retreat with corporate chief executive officers, according to people familiar with his plans.

The Obama administration has been at odds with the Chamber, which fought Obama’s health-care and financial regulatory overhauls and committed $75 million to political ads in the midterm congressional elections, mainly directed against Democrats. The CEO summit would be a way to address complaints from some executives the Democratic administration is anti- business.

Call On Senator Harry Reid To Tell GOP Senators, 'No Vote, No Vacation'

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Protect Our Elections calls on Senator Harry Reid to tell Republican Senators, ";No Vote, No Vacation!"; Last June, the House of Representatives passed the DISCLOSE Act to put some common sense limits on corporate funding of elections. But when the bill was called for a vote in the Senate, not a single Republican voted for it because they wanted corporations to flood their campaigns with hundreds of millions in secret money.

Current Update: Ohio Chamber reneges on commitment to produce names of contributors

At today's hearing at the Ohio Elections Commission, Bradley Smith, former chairman of the Federal Elections Commission, serving as counsel to Partnership for Ohio's Future, stated that all anyone had to do was ask for their list of contributors--and Cliff did not ask.  TV 10 and a film maker videoed the hearing, and a court reporter recorded it as well.

After the hearing I asked and was assured by Linda Woggon in the presence of Brad Smith that the she would send the information to me.  I served subpoenas for the information when I did not receive anything.  Brad then called me and said that they would have the material by 2:00 pm, or 3:00 at the latest.  At 3:30 a delivery person arrived at my office with a motion to quash our subpoenas.

The Chamber has returned to a policy of secrecy after four election cycles in which it published the names of its contributors to influence candidate elections.

Election Attorneys File Racketeering Complaint Against Karl Rove and Tom Donohue's Elections Operations - Complaint Charges Fraud, False Statement And Illegal Coordination

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by ProtectOurElections.org:

Yesterday, Ohio election attorney Cliff Arnebeck filed a two-count complaint with the Ohio Election Commission against The Partnership for Ohio's Future, an affiliate of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, alleging two overarching charges under state racketeering laws. First, that the Partnership is "...not truly independent, but rather has been coordinated with the Republican candidates, their agents, committees, parties and their de facto coordinated national campaign being directed by Karl Rove." Second, that the Partnership is making false statements by saying that its ads are "not authorized by a candidate or a candidate's committee," when in fact they are. Affidavit_of_Complaint.PDF

More Reports of Foreign Money Polluting Right Wing Campaigns

A few weeks ago Lupatifer passed on reports of the documented flood of foreign money being funneled into the right wing Chamber of Commerce's campaigns which the Chamber has directed mostly at pushing the right wing's corporate agenda and which has resulted in more recent allegations of threats of violence by the Chamber of Commerce and directed at the watchdog groups tracking the foreign money flood.

Now, we have more reports of foreign money polluting and distorting the American campaign process:

European Polluters Funding Senate Candidates Who Oppose Action On Global Warming

As the Wonk Room has extensively documented, nearly all of the Republican candidates for Senate — both incumbents and challengers — dispute that the United States must take action to fight global warming pollution, while many of them deny that global warming exists in the first place. “There is much debate in the scientific community as to the precise sources of global warming,” claims Pat Toomey, the GOP Senate candidate in Pennsylvania. “Global warming is ‘the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people,’” says Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK).

It remains to be seen if that stance will pay off at the polls, but for many of these global warming deniers, it already has paid off in the form of sizeable donations from overseas polluters. A new analysis by Climate Action Network Europe has found that large European companies that are among the continent’s biggest greenhouse gas polluters have been dumping large amounts of money into U.S. Senate races, almost exclusively to candidates that oppose the idea of taking action to stop global warming.

ThinkProgress has already documented how money from foreign oil companies is being directed to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which is running a $75 million ad campaign against Democratic candidates, and these direct candidate contributions from European polluters exceed the amount that oil billionaires Charles and David Koch have donated to Senate campaigns.

Even odder, given the fringe Tea Party's ranting and raving about the "evuls of Europe" and conspiracies of "New World Orders"?

These rich European polluters are directing their money towards Tea Party Candidates, as well:

Chamber of Commerce threatening critics? FBI probe requested.

Just a quick note to point to an item at LegalSchnauzer on threats by the United States Chamber of Commerce and its supporters against one of the Chamber's persistent critics, Velvet Revolution (VR).

Our readers will recall the VR campaign, StopTheChamber.com, as one that was started in 2009 to focus attention to possibly illegal activities of the Chamber, under its chief Tom Donahue,

Yesterday, LegalSchnauzer reported that a new letter has been sent to the FBI by VR's attorney, Kevin Zeese, requesting that the law enforcement agency investigate a series of threats against his organization.

These reportedly began shortly after launch of the Stop The Chamber campaign and included insults and explicit threats of violence.  They've apparently increased with VR's current advocacy efforts to track other Chamber activities such as the joint campaign financing effort with Karl Rove, AmericanCrossroadsWatch.org

Hundreds Of Thousands Collected By Chamber To Influence Elections

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- StopTheChamber.com, a group of watchdog organizations dedicated to corporate accountability, today renewed its calls for a criminal investigation and complete audit of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in light of yesterday's stunning revelation that the Chamber has been actively soliciting money from foreign companies to influence American elections. In a report released yesterday, the non partisan Center for American Progress Action Fund found that the Chamber has been blatantly violating campaign finance laws not only by accepting money from foreign companies but also soliciting that money and then using it to try to influence U.S. Elections. http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/05/foreign-chamber-commerce/

Zeese: Can Anyone Stop Rove’s Crime Against Democracy While it is in Progress?

In this first post-Citizens United election, voters are the victims of a democracy crime that the government seems unable, or unwilling, to stop despite it occurring right before our eyes.

Political operatives, like Karl Rove, are misusing the tax laws to create organizations that allow for anonymous and unlimited donations from corporations and the super-rich in order to determine the outcome of the mid-term elections in violation of election and tax laws. AmericanCrossroadsWatch.org Files Criminal Complaints, Offers Reward, Creates Ads, And Launches Boycotts

Today, www.AmericanCrossroadsWatch.org, a group of national watchdog organizations dedicated to clean elections and corporate accountability launched a new campaign to stop Karl Rove from using dirty tricks and dirty money to manipulate the mid-term elections by buying candidates who will support Big Business and deregulation. Rove created American Crossroads ("AC") several months ago in a hostile takeover of the Republican National Committee, and funded it by joining forces with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a cabal of billionaire corporate barons opposed to any common sense regulation, health care, environmental protection, or financial accountability.  The Chamber's Chief Counsel, Steven Law, was named AC's CEO.  AC plans to amass more than $50 million from companies making secret donations, and spend that money to influence elections and buy candidates.

Voter Beware Concentrated Corporate Power is Creating Deceptive Elections

With permission by Kevin Zeese.

The Republican Party is being replaced with secret donors and unlimited donations as concentrated corporate interests spend hundreds of millions in the Mid-term elections.

In the last week Democrats were gloating about how little money the Republican Party had in its campaign coffers. The Republican National Committee has just over $5 million in the bank for the final stretch of the 2010 midterm election campaign and is carrying over $2 million in debt.

These figures have Democrats jumping for joy, but their excitement is misplaced. The combination of Michael Steele and Citizens United is creating a paradigm shift in how elections are funded among Republicans. Rather than giving to the Republican Party, where Michael Steele controls the money, their name is made public and they are limited by regulation as to how much they can give, major donors have abandoned the RNC and are giving to 527 and 501(c)(4) organizations, which can also take money directly from corporations. This new approach to campaign finance will alter U.S. politics reducing the power of political parties and increasing the power of concentrated corporate wealth.

"Election Lawyer Files Document Hold Against U.S. Chamber of Commerce
And American Crossroads For Alleged Money Laundering, Insider Talks"

by Rebecca Abrahams

Election fraud attorney Bob Fitrakis sent letters today to attorneys representing the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Crossroads requesting that they retain all documents, emails, accounting records and other records. This “document hold” is the first step toward legal action based on the groups’ alleged laundering of illegal campaign contributions from large corporations.

Fitrakis, in a telephone interview, explained, “We are planning on notifying the groups [as part of our] investigation and we’re requesting that they hold all those documents pertaining to what we believe is an illegal money laundering scheme.”
