Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck - part of the problem: "Shoot them in the head" video

I won't embellish this since the video speaks loudly enough.

Aired 6/10/10
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,594343,00.html

"I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don't. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep's clothing — change the pose. You will get the ends.

You've been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You're going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you."

I was able to find the complete transcript passage @ Fox from which this excerpt and video clip were taken. That passage is included below the fold, if you want the context.

It shouldn't change your understanding of this, I don't think. But that may be because I find it tough to understand his rants frequently.

[UPDATED: with commentary from Bradblog regarding the would-be shooter in California, Byron Williams. This video clip was his instruction, apparently. Go below the fold for update.]

Smoking Out The "Glenn Beck For President" Lobby

Maybe? I am not saying for certain that she is fronting another in a long line of AstroTurf groups for the GOP and corporate interests... But take a look and decide for yourself. For all I know, she may just be as crazy as her movement and video implies?

First, and via Gawker, we get this little bit of giggle:

The Time Has Come to Make Glenn Beck President, Says Clown Lady

Most Americans want Glenn Beck to be our next president and return us to prosperity. The only hiccup? Getting him to run! Fortunately, the clown lady in this video is circulating a petition to change all that.

Her name is Robin Potwora, and the website for her "grassroots organization," Main Street Bites Back, features a number of terrifying robot-voiced videos of illustrated political figures, including the hated Barack Obama.

Aside from this "grassroots" clown gig? Well, given the Torrington, Connecticut address on "Main Street Bites Back" contact page and the name to go with it... I think it is safe to say that she may just be tied to some  very right wing and typical "grasstroots" lobbying money...

The Tobacco Industry to be precise:

Open Thread - Crises of Capitalism

A talk from RSA Animate that is definitely outside of the realm of typical discussion you will hear anywhere in the USA since it the words and thoughts of David Harvey, a real Marxist.

In this RSA Animate, radical social theorist David Harvey asks if it is time to look beyond capitalism towards a new social order that would allow us to live within a system that really could be responsible, just, and humane?

Note that the real Marxist agrees with Glenn Beck saying that he "has a certain truth", as in a certain amount (or grain) of truth Harvey attributes to framed discussions coming from every political ideology on this issue.

Hope it made ya think. And think again...  And this thread is open!

Open Thread: Stephen Colbert Discusses "Beck, The Prophet"

Glenn Beck calls Fox Owner a 9/11 terrorist! He is going to get FIRED for this!

It finally happened. Glenn Beck has gone too far for his right wing owners. How do I know that? Because he just blamed 9/11 on one of the guys who pays his salary.

Watch the video here.

The guy Beck is blaming for 9/11 is one of his bosses, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who just happens to be the largest stockholder of Fox News who isn't a member of majority owner Rupert Murdoch's family.

Calling your boss a terrorist who is responsible for 9/11 can't be good for your job security, can it?

Glenn Beck: Hammerhead

From the blog of Jim Wallis, CEO of Sojourners:

Last week, when radio and television talk show host Glenn Beck said that social justice is a “code word” for Communism and Nazism, and urged people to leave their churches if they teach social justice, I decided that message needed to be challenged.

[...snip...]

In fact, on Friday, I sent Glenn a letter proposing that the two of us sit down together and have an open and public discussion on what social justice really means and how Christians are called to engage in the struggle for justice. I said, “let’s make this a civil dialogue and not engage in personal attacks on each other — which is never helpful in trying to sort out what is true. So let’s talk about the heart of the matter.”

Beck, the unstable lunatic that he is, responded on-air yesterday, the Ides of March. An excerpt of his response, again from Wallis's blog:

So Jim, I just wanted to pass this on to you. In my time I will respond — my time, well, kind of like God’s time, might be a day, might be a week to you, I’m not sure. But I’m going to get to it in my time, not your time. So you go ahead and you continue to do your protest thing, and that’s great. I love it. But just know — the hammer is coming, because little do you know, for eight weeks, we’ve been compiling information on you, your cute little organization, and all the other cute little people that are with you. And when the hammer comes, it’s going to be hammering hard and all through the night, over and over…

Um, sure Glenn.

You're a perfect example of insanity and extremism, living in a world fabricated to achieve maximum delusion.

Go get 'em.

On a final, ending note, from Lordrag of DelphiForums -- my new favorite quote about Beck:

When Glenn Becks looks into the Abyss, the Abyss shudders, and says, 'That guy is fuckin creepy.'

Yeah, he is.

Frank Schaeffer: Organizing to Stop Far Right Violence on HuffPo

Wow!  A couple of days ago, I asked the rhetorical question "...What's next, wholesale body bags?" to address the wave of terroristic violence that has overtaken the country since the last election.  In our society of mega-extreme-new-improved-more-bigger-better-faster-now provocation to consume, my fear is that there's only one direction that wave can go. Bigger.

Frank Schaeffer inspired my article and StopDomesticTerror.com because, as he says today on HuffintonPost,

I started pondering the question of what we could do right after the assassination of Dr. Tiller by a religious extremist. I felt that it wasn't enough to call for boycotts of right wing commentators who spew their hate, because that did not really address the core problems.

In fact as a former right wing religious "pro-life" leader I felt compelled to publicly apologize (in the Huffington Post) for the "America-is-like-Nazi-Germany" rhetoric that my late Evangelical leader father and I helped create in the 1970s and 80s that inexorably led to justifying violence in the Tiller case.

StopDomesticTerror.com - Murdered MDs? Presidential assassination? Hangings? Military coups? What's next?

Wholesale Body Bags.

The voice of the radical right has driven 'the base' over the edge.  By the first weeks of the Obama Administration, they had cleared the ammo from shelves of gun shops around the country by fear-mongering popular demand. Ever since, and with a constituency that is lock-and-load ready, an endless list of action items has shifted the screams of radicalizers to shrill overdrive.

How many more times will Fox's Beck or Limbaugh fan the fanatical flames that burn inside of rightwing extremists to another violent climax, before sane America demands a stop be put to the incitement of domestic terror?

It's too late for some innocent victims whose killers responded to the voices of media and talking-head cheerleaders. But, if they stop even now, it may prove too late for others who will fall to the echoes of voices still resounding inside the heads of the independently rabid.

Make no mistake, it is terrorism according to the Executive Order signed by President Bush in September of 2001 that was explicit in its definition:

Executive Order 13224

(d) the term "terrorism" means an activity that

-- (i) involves a violent act or an act dangerous to human life, property, or infrastructure; and

-- (ii) appears to be intended

---- (A) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

---- (B) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or

---- (C) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, kidnapping, or hostage-taking.

It's not just for millenial religious warfare anymore: Terrorism for profit was born right here in the USA.

Beyond The Pale -- The Treasonous Bloodlust of the GOP's Reichwing Lunatic Fringe

It's not too late to stop the madness, but we're awfully close to falling over the edge and into the abyss. Remember when I issued this note of caution?

__________

It's begun. The wackos have all begun to unwind and step out from behind their stately faux patriotism with their lunatic friends, fomenting rebellion and attempting to instigate violence. It's an insidious fifth column of propaganda and divisiveness, delivered through auspices of free speech yet fooling few in the rank desperation of their calls to incitement.

-- GreyHawk, Inappropriate Political Discourse: The Blood of Patriots and Tyrants

__________

Well, since then, the incitement and frothing nutty insanity of the right has grown significantly. Republican "leaders" are now openly telling their faithful to "get their guns" and buy more bullets, to prepare for a time to "take back" America.

"Take back" America? They "had" America for 8 years, during which they ravaged the nation and ran amuck; now, they want to "take it back"? From Glenn Beck's recent insane drivel about "the military and police are with us" to Rep. Trent Franks referring to Obama as an "enemy of humanity" the reichwing's anti-American hatespeech has been steadily escalating. It's spilling over into action more and more often now: people showing up with guns at rallys with the President, the assassination of Dr. George Tiller and the lynching, and subsequent smearing of Bill Sparkman.

These people are no longer operating with anything but the intent to incite violence and depose a legitimately elected, popular and intelligent leader in favor of a return to their corrupt, inept and destructive control of our nation.

We've covered some aspects of this behavior before (Boehner at CPAC calling all of Obama's Policies Socialist), and here's a quick list of other stories that have hit the wires lately:

See also: inappropriate political discourse

This is beyond the pale, ladies and gentlemen.

It's time for leaders and lawmakers to stand beside law-abiding citizens to denounce and quell these unAmerican, dangerous, hate-filled acts and to assert an air of sanity back into the rapidly decaying mental state of the GOP's lunatic base.

And it's time to publicly denounce and censure all those GOP "leaders" who participate in these efforts to foment and incite violent dissention.

No more free passes.

These bastards fought any efforts to hold them and the previous administration accountable during the Bush years while they gleefully bragged about how they were going to continue to do whatever they wanted. They sought a "permanent Republican majority" and a golden age of graft.

They destroyed our infrastructure and economy, and most importantly they LOST the last election.

They are now looking for any excuse to refuse the new President and Administration the courtesy of helping clean up the mess they made; they are now steadfastly determined to block any part of the new agenda, and to incite their more rabid followers to violence in efforts to further damage our nation.

This must end now, before any more blood is spilled. They must be held accountable, and forced to begin acting like adults instead of dangerously unbalanced psychotic thugs and legalized mobsters.

Glenn Beck's Ratings: Headline Snooze

When CNN announced the hiring of radio talk jock Glenn Beck almost two years ago, they used words like "cordial," "conversational" and "not confrontational" to describe him. What they delivered was the polar opposite of that, as has been well documented by Media Matters. Despite CNN's laughable depiction of Beck as "Miss Congeniality," they knew exactly the sort of piffle they were peddling. Their programming strategy stated at the time was to...

"...build Beck into the type of TV personality that could siphon viewers from Bill O'Reilly, Joe Scarborough and other conservative hosts."

They failed.

Beck's ratings for November 2007 (25-54 demo) reveal a program on life support. At this point the humane thing to do would be to pull the plug and put Beck (and innocent TV viewers) out of their misery.

As shown here, Beck loses to all of his competitors in cable news. Both his live show and his repeat come in 4th out of four programs. That doesn't leave much for him to brag about.

But that's not the end of his problems.
