Obama, Cornyn on Veterans Drug Testing

'Outrageous'; Meanwhile WH Slams ABC News Report
Senators Barack Obama and John Cornyn Are Calling for an Investigation Into Government Tests of Suicide-Linked Drugs on Veterans

Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and John Cornyn (R-TX) are calling for an investigation after an ABC News/Washington Times report revealed that veterans are being recruited for government tests on suicide-linked drugs.

Yesterday I posted about this Atrocity as it was breaking on ABC, link goes to the post at my site.

"It is outrageous and unacceptable that our government would irresponsibly endanger veterans who have already sacrificed so much for our country," said Sen. Obama Tuesday morning.
Republican Senator Cornyn, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is also calling for an investigation this afternoon and has sent a letter to the Secretary of the Veterans Administration, James B. Peake.
"I've requested that VA Secretary Peake look into the allegations and, if needed, take the immediate steps necessary to identify the responsible parties, provide appropriate care to any veterans who have undergone this testing, and ensure that any unethical practices are immediately brought to a halt," said Sen. Cornyn.

And from the Soldier in this report:

"They never told me that I was going to be suicidal, that I would cease sleeping. They never told me anything except this will help me quit smoking," Elliott told ABC News and The Washington Times.

And this is what this Incompetent Criminal Administration, sending the soldiers into these Theaters Multiple Times and using Stop Loss to shore up the Ranks, thinks about not informing these Vets as to the Side Effects of these Drugs while giving them to Veterans Already suffering from PTSD, the Trauma's of the Experiance of War!

Meanwhile the White House slammed the report. In a briefing today Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto called the story "irresponsible reporting" that took "the experience of this one veteran and trying to leave the impression that this was a situation for all veterans."
"And to try to imply that and, in fact, not even imply, see the words scrolled on a television screen this morning, that the VA is using our veterans as guinea pigs, I thought, was one of the most awful things I've ever had to watch on television," said Fratto.

This is the so called political party that Sells Itself as being "Strong on National Defense", not only allowing 9/11 to occur but than Breaking the Professional Military, while using the Reserve Military Extensively, and not only the Reserves but the Civilian Militia, National Guard, many doing duty not on these shores in National Emergencies and ready for Defense of but serving in these Occupation Theaters, for whatever gains they and their political partners are receiving from the Blood Money of War Profitteering, as they build their Mercenary Army with unlimited Treasury cash!

Chapin and his Veterans Charity

Chapin's Controversial Charity Backs Off Claims

A veterans charity run by controversial "nonprofit entrepreneur" Roger Chapin and currently under regulatory investigation has quietly filed an amended federal tax return acknowledging for the first time its own doubts that a deal comprising half its entire charitable effort ever took place.

The new filing for 2006 by the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Foundation of Ossining, N.Y., sought to cure a number of flaws pointed out by Forbes and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance, a leading charity watchdog. Among other matters, the revised return for the first time listed the board membership and full compensation that year of Chapin associate Michael V. Meyer and disclosed his ownership of a consultancy that was paid to handle the now-questioned deal.

I feel an obligation to comment here on Chantix as I took it back in 2006 for about 6 weeks to quit smoking--which I did. Completely.

For those unfamiliar with the drug Chanitx, it blocks nicotine receptors in the brain. The desire to smoke, take in nicotine, just ceases to exist. The most common side effect is an upset stomach but I saw depression listed too, in the information about the drug provided by the pharmacist. Anyone who is susceptible to depression knows that suicide is the direct risk of a severe depression left untreated.

This gets back to something the US needs to tackle: more open discussions about mental health and the brain. It's still a stigma in this country to have a brain illness.

I wondered if maybe that's what most people really don't understand. Doctor's treat depression because it can lead to suicide, in other words death. Maybe most folks don't really "get" that. So when they hear depression is a side effect, they think they're going to just get a little case of the blues. But it could get worse than just the blues.

How do I feel about Chantix? I didn't take the full dose as I felt it was working at the lower introductory dosage. That also meant I didn't need to ramp up or down off of it. After about 6 weeks, I was ready to deal without the drug. In the end, it helped me to quit smoking.

I quit on the Wednesday just after the November elections in 2006. I didn't think I could handle not smoking on election night.

Anyway, just thought I should say something.
