Open Thread - Italy's Nuclear Waste coming to Utah
I couldn't believe my eyes this morning when I read this title:
Judge says Utah can accept foreign nuclear waste
Now I'm thinking that we have loads of problems with the nuclear waste that is generated here in the US without accepting foreign nuclear waste. Okay...getting that waste from Italy to Utah must be some mean trick....... The article only gives a tiny bit of info:
EnergySolutions Inc. wants to import up to 20,000 tons of low-level radioactive waste from Italy. After processing in Tennessee, about 1,600 tons would be disposed of in Utah.
If approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the waste would be imported through the ports of Charleston, S.C. or New Orleans.
Evidentally Energy Solutions Inc. wants to do business........
EnergySolutions contends it needs to dispose of foreign waste here so it can develop relationships with foreign countries, and ultimately, build disposal facilities abroad. EnergySolutions has pledged to limit the amount of international waste disposed at its Utah facility to 5 percent of its remaining capacity.
I hunted around to find just who the management were of EnergySolutions,Inc. but didn't find much. I personally think it is a BAD idea and I hope the NRC declines them permission.

Great catch avahome
I agree this sounds like a very bad idea. And think of how many states that waste will travel across before it arrives in Utah? EnergySolutions might see this is a beneficial move for them personally but hard to see how there will be anywhere near a benefit to the states put at risk during the transportation of the waste.
