Forced Circumcision: The New Right Wing Meme

Perhaps disappointed that death panels failed to frighten the tar and feathers out of the average American, the right wing appears to have settled on a new meme to undercut healthcare reform: the CDC will force males to undergo circumcision. (h/t Avahome.)

Loosely based on a CDC report to be presented at an AIDS prevention gathering in Atlanta, Fox News, Reason Online, and The Drudge Report claim that the CDC is considering forced circumcision of all males to prevent the spread of HIV.

David Harsanyi, a Denver Post columnist and author of Nanny State wrote in Reason Online:

Here's the problem: Why is the CDC launching campaigns to "universally" promote a medical procedure? If you're an adult (and nuts) or a parent, no one stands in your way of having a bris. Today 79 percent of men are circumcised already, and even if 100 percent were, the effect on the collective health of the nation would be negligible. If this is the standard, where does it stop?

And what would a proactive CDC mean if government operated health insurance? No, I don't believe Washington would deploy a phalanx of grinning, twisted doctors to perform coerced circumcisions. But when the CDC dispenses medical advice of the "universal" brand, it's difficult to accept that a government-run public insurance outfit wouldn't heed advice and act accordingly.

And from Fox:

The move comes after officials analyzed the results of several studies that show in African countries hit hard by HIV, men who were circumcised reduced their infection risk by half, the New York Times reported. However, those studies focused on heterosexual men who are at risk of getting HIV from infected female partners. The main issue in the U.S. is men who have sex with men.

This nonsensical remark (referring to a conspiracy theory circulated among anti-semites that the Jews are actually lizards from outer space attempting to make America's males less virile through circumcision) appeared at the top of the comment thread on the Drudge Report:

Make the decision for botched circumcision alien gestation with teeth for castration green towel meets tongue vibrator in the neutrino screen your parallel fluoridated mind control smoothies poured over chemtrails in overhead compartments 'cause there's mercury in your apartments and the water isn't safe isn't safe isn't safe isn't safe isn't safe that was a fucking hot orgasm I just saw in the wall bricks taste the plaid box good soundly

DON'T LET THE REPTILES MAKE YOU EAT THE FUCKING THORAZINE!

The hysteria stems from a report to be presented at the CDC conference showing that heterosexual circumcised men in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa were 60% less likely to contract HIV. A group calling itself Intact America plans to drive around Atlanta carrying a sign that reads "circumcising babies does not prevent HIV." (If you have time, check out this MSNBC video clip featuring the director of the organization debating a pediatrician regarding the CDC findings.

According to the Dallas Examiner, the sensationalized press coverage of the report is "speculation."

It is important to note that the recommendations are still in development and CDC has made no determination at this time about the final content. CDC is employing a deliberative, evidence-based process for developing the circumcision recommendations, which allows for both external and internal CDC experts to provide input.
