What Is In The Swine Flu Vaccine: A Primer

What Is In The Swine Flu Vaccine: A Primer
By Elaina George, MD

There has been a lot of confusion about what ingredients are in the H1N1 Vaccine. In order to distill the information to make it easier for you to make an informed choice, here is a brief synopsis of the information provided by the manufacturers in their package inserts.

There are 4 manufactures who have been approved to sell H1N1 vaccine in the US. They are: Novartis, CSL, Sanofi/Pasteur and MedImmune

1. Novartis makes an injectable vaccine for ages 4 and above
Ingredients: Thimerosal (Mercury) both in the single dose and the multi dose vials
Antibiotics - polymyxin and neomycin (can be neurotoxic)

Manufactured with phenol (the chemical used on skin in cosmetic face peals to remove wrinkles)

Note: They recommend that children ages 4-9 get 2 injections one month apart. This would increase the risk from a reaction to the mercury (e.g, neurological damage such as Gullain-Barre or possibly Autism)

2. CSL makes an injectable vaccine. Only the multi dose vial contains thimerosal

3. Sanofi/Pasteur - Only the multi dose vial contains thimerosal

vaccine is made with polyethelene glycol (antifreeze) and formaldehyde (a chemical used in embalming).

*These three vaccines are grown in chicken embryo cells. So if a person has severe allergies to eggs, they are at risk of having an allergic reaction and should therefore not take the vaccine.

4. MedImmune makes a live attenuated H1N1 vaccine that has an intranasal delivery.

It does not contain thimerosal, but has the food additive MSG (monosodium glutamate) which can cause reactions in some people who are sensitive, it also contains gentamycin (an antibiotic which can be neurotoxic and cause hearing loss)

BR>As per the package inserts from all of the manufacturers:

Note: "Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility
Neither FLUVIRIN nor the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine have been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility."

*In other words, NONE of the H1NI vaccines have been evaluated for the possible potential to cause cancer, birth defects or its effect on fertility. This is according to the information from all of the manufacturers.

eeek!  I did read a couple of days ago that some study concluded that mercury poisoning isn't associated to autism. It was based upon blood samples of autistic children.

MSG makes me kind of sick if too much in Chinese food. I  haven't tried anti-freeze lately, at least I hope not.

This doesn't sound good, gallows humor aside. Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for sharing it. Should I post it.

Hey Carol,

Absolutely. At least it would give people information to make an informed choice.

There is an autism study that looked at urine samples and found that mercury was present in children with autism and wasn't there in children without autism. The question has not been definitively answered..

Take care,

Elaina

We won't be getting the vaccine. Thanks!

getting the shot either.

had the intranasal delivery one. The only issue I had with it was that it contained the live virus which increased the risk of them actually getting swine flu. But the reality is that the small risk of them getting it from the shot/snort far outweighed the huge risk of them getting it from some other kid.

It is a week and a half later and the biggest complaint the kids have had was the discomfort of the thing they put in their nose.

Anyways... Don't be afraid to hit DemFromCT's Fluwiki. :)

Do not get your information on the H1N1 vaccine from an otolaryngologist posting on the web. Check reputable sources like the CDC and the published literature. Anyone is free to read the abstracts from thousands upon thousands of peer-reviewed articles in pubmed.gov.

Also, while there may be ONE bogus study linking mercury to autism there are HUNDREDS (if not thousands) that have shown no association. Again, check pubmed. Thimerosol was removed from childhood vaccines in 1999 and autism has not declined. No reputable scientist believes this assertion.

This is junk science, pure and simple.

This information was taken directly from the package inserts of vaccines made by Novartis, Sanofi/Pasteur, MedImmune and CSL.

There are other sources besides the pharmaceutical company sponsored studies and the information posted by the CDC.

I believe that individuals deserve to have as much information as possible to make an informed decision.

It is appropriate for people to question whether the risks outweigh the benefits when they consider taking this vaccine.

I didn't state that autism was definitively linked to thiamerosal, but there have been studies that have suggested a link.

Information on what vaccines that still contain thiamerosal

http://vaccinesafety.edu/thi-table.htm provides a table of vaccines that shows what vaccines do contain mercury.

I recently saw a patient that presented with tinnitus and hearing loss after receiving the flu shot. Knowing that gentamycin and streptomycin (two antibiotics that are known to be ototoxic i.e., toxic to the inner ear) are present concerns me.

The CDC admits that it uses self reporting of general flu symptoms, pneumonia in addition to lab confirmed cases of H1N1 in its reporting on the prevalence. That would suggest that there has been over reporting of the number of cases of H1N1. They have also attributed deaths to H1N1 that are actually due to secondary bacterial pneumonia.

See: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/reportingqa.htm

The H1N1 has been no more deadly than the seasonal flu. The vaccine has been fast tracked so testing has been less extensive. People need to weigh the risks and benefits, read information from as many sources as possible, speak with their doctors and make an informed decision that is best for them and their family.

If they choose not to take the vaccine, they should not be demonized.
